What to expect?

Information About the Work

What to expect:
  1. Busses leave from Portage North Middle School at 6:00 am and Portage Central Elementary School at 6:15 am.
  2. We will arrive in the fields and start working at 7:00 am.
  3. Water breaks will be taken as needed.
  4. Lunch is 30 minutes unpaid.
  5. Bring change to call for your ride home.
  6. We will arrive back at the schools between 3:30 and 4:30.
Reminders:
  1. Detasseling is not summer camp. Detasseling is work!
  2. I have been in the corn fields for over 28 years, detasseling can be enjoyable.
  3. You must be 13 to work.
  4. I will be the only one calling you about detasseling. If someone else besides myself calls you just let them know you are already working for Andy Simmons.

Items You Will Need

  1. Pack a lunch in a small one person cooler. Do not pack lunches together. Workers could be at different ends of the field at lunch time so I want to make sure everyone will have his/hers lunch at lunch time.
  2. Corn will be wet in the mornings, from the dew. Rain gear is recommended to keep you dry.
  3. Sunscreen for face, ears, arms, and back of the neck.
  4. Bring a hat to keep the sun off your head.
  5. Your feet will get wet, old tennis shoes work the best (do not wear sandals).
  6. Gloves that fit tight and dry quickly.
  7. You can wear shorts if you would like.
  8. Write your name on anything you bring to work (i.e. your lunch and rain gear).
